Brain Magnets, Nasal Spray, or Antidepressants? Which treatment for Hard-to-treat Depression

Two treatments have gained prevalence in recent years for hard-to-treat depression. Those being repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and intranasal esketamine. These modern treatments have yet to be compared in the same study, leaving a “knowledge gap” for those trying to choose the best path forward. The question that researchers ask in this paper is: when comparing rTMS and ketamine treatment, which one provides the most benefit for patients with hard-to-treat depression?
